Candle light offers a low light source for subject/objects which is much weaker than your flash. It offers brilliant photographs where in it reflects a glow condition, with some yellowish orange tint. Try experimenting with and without the light source as both offer a different result. One problem I usually face with this kind of snap is the extra shine if the face is not oil/sweat free. A small layer of sweat itself will break the uniform and gradual glow. Luckily this one came perfect.

I asked Tan to make a serious/sad face, while placing a candle next to her. The open aperture of f1.8 ensures a natural blur photograph with her right eye being sharp and the rest of the face gradually blurring. The light source gives life to her expression, focusing the attention of the viewer on the face and since its a weak source everything else fades to darkness.
